1906-1967Nacido en Point Loma, hoy integrado en la ciudad de San Diego, California, hijo de emigrantes alemanes, trabaja como actor en Nueva York, ciudad a la que se habian trasladado sus padres. De actor pasa a ser regidor y, algo despues, director. Segun sus propias palabras, trabajo y aprendio mucho con hombres de teatro como Rouben Mamoulian, David Belasco y Chester Erskine. A finales de 1937 lo encontramos trabajando para David O’Selznick como director de casting.Finalizada esta etapa breve, se introduce en Paramount, donde aprende verdaderamente el oficio de director. Asi, en 1942 tiene su primera oportunidad como tal; la pelicula, un inteligente producto de serie B, se llamaba Dr. Broadway. En la serie B permanecio Mann durante varios anos, trabajando para Universal (una vez), Republic, RKO y Eagle Lion hasta que, en 1949, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lo contrata para hacer un punado de peliculas que, si no disponian de presupuestos muy generosos, si le otorgaron la posibilidad de rodar su primer western, La puerta del Diablo (luego pasaria a ser el tercero porque Winchester 73 y Las furias se estrenaron antes). Tan to La puerta del Diablo como Las furias, que rodo para Paramount, tienen tintes shakespearea nos, especialmente la segunda, y desde luego son westerns con un elevado grado de madurez, westerns “distintos”. Pero sera ese mismo ano, 1950, el que vera nacer la primera de un conjunto de peliculas modelicas, cinco en total, dirigidas por Anthony Mann y protagonizadas por James Stewart, que consolidaran al realizador como uno de los iconos del western moderno. Aunque en lo sucesivo se alternaran en la filmografia del director los westerns y los filmes de otro tipo, por ejemplo, los grandes espectaculos visuales como El Cid (1961) y La caida del imperio romano (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1963), dirigidas en Espana para Samuel Bronston, Mann sera, ya para siempre, “el hombre del oeste”. Budd Boetticher, Delmer Daves, John Ford, Ho ward Hawks, Anthony Mann y Sam Peckinpah son, por orden alfabetico, los grandes nombres del western. A ellos se pueden acercar Henry Hathaway y William A. Wellman, pero probablemente el primero de todos es Anthony Mann, autor de una obra rica y coherente en la que combina a la perfeccion el espacio abierto y sus cualidades, con el ser humano y sus pasiones. El dolor mitico asociado a la venganza lo expresa James Stewart, el actor clave de los westerns de Mann, de modo incomparable, aunque hay que detenerse en la leccion, que roza lo sublime, que nos dictan, a duo, director y actor, en este caso Gary Cooper, en esa obra maestra que se llama El hombre del Oeste. 1913-1972Despues de salir de la escuela, a los trece anos, va de trabajo en trabajo hasta que en 1930 se establece dentro del cine de animacion. En el permanece hasta 1944, en que pasa a ser escritor de gags para, entre otros, los Hermanos Marx y Lucille Ball. Como guionista, escribe peliculas para Bob Hope y tambien para Red Skelton, comicos muy populares en los anos 40. En 1952, con The First Time, tiene ocasion de dirigir, por primera vez, una pelicula con actores de carne y hueso. El hijo de Rostro Palido es su segunda pelicula. Indiscutible rey de la comedia comica de los anos 50, Frank Tashlin, con toda probabilidad, es el responsable de la posterior carrera en solitario, como actor y tambien como director, de Jerry Lewis, a quien dirigio en pareja con Dean Martin. Tambien Bob Hope, Tom Ewell, Jayne Mansfield y Doris Day figuran entre su elenco de actores. Inevitablemente, su unica incursion en el western tiene un tono claramente parodico. 1916-2001Nacido en Chicago, Oscar Boetticher, Jr. estudio en la Central High School, la Culver Military Academy y la Universidad estatal de Ohio, donde destaco en futbol americano y en beisbol. Mas tarde, como es conocido, se interesaria tambien, vivamente, por el mundo de los toros, llegando a debutar como torero. Tal vez por esto ultimo fue contratado por la Fox como consejero tecnico de la pelicula Blood and Sand (Sangre y arena, Rouben Mamoulian, 1941). Casi de inmediato, en 1944, empieza a dirigir mo destas peliculas con su nombre completo, incluido el primero de sus westerns, The Wolf Hunters. Con The Bullfighter and the Lady (1951), de ambiente taurino, firmada ya como Budd Boetticher, empieza la que podria llamarse segunda etapa de su filmografia, de tono mas personal. Entre 1951 y 1956 dirige doce peliculas, nueve de ellas para Universal, con mayor o menor fortuna, de las que seis, exactamente la mitad, son westerns, algunos estimables. El propio Boetticher manifesto publicamente su preferencia por Traicion en Fort King, tal vez por ser el que peores criticas recibio. Se convierte en uno de los grandes nombres del western, y se hace justamente fa moso en todo el mundo a raiz de la realizacion de siete peliculas, cuatro de las cuales (Seven Men from Now, Los cautivos, Cabalgando en solitario y Estacion Comanche) cuentan con guion de Burt Ken nedy. Conocido este conjunto de peliculas como el “ci clo Ranown” (Randolph Scott + Harry Joe Brown), las siete fueron protagonizadas por Randolph Scott, y constituyen un hito singular dentro de la historia del genero cine matografico al que pertenecen. Cada una de ellas presenta un modelo de “itinerario” hacia la vida, la libertad, mas raramente el amor, que ha cen de este punado de joyas cinematograficas un material de gran interes humano y no menor belleza plastica y dramatica, presidido por la sencillez, la ausencia, por tanto, de retoricas, conceptual y formal, y la coherencia artistica. Por ello, el nombre de Budd Boe tticher figurara siempre con letras de oro en el panteon de hombres ilustres del western sonoro.El fin del ciclo Ranown parece ser, tambien, el fin de la ac tividad de Boetticher como director, si exceptuamos esporadicos episodios de series televisivas, labor que inicio en 1950, antes incluso de rodar The Bullfighter and the Lady, un postrer western, A Time for Dying, y un par de peliculas de tono documental. Hay quien afirma que, de no haber existido las peliculas del ciclo Ranown, el nombre de Budd Boetticher apenas mereceria una nota a pie de pagina en los diccionarios de directores. Tal afirmacion es, sin duda, exagerada, lo que no obsta para que, efectivamente, sean las peliculas de ese ciclo, consideradas individualmente y tambien en conjunto, las que le hayan supuesto su mayor gloria.
